HOW IT STARTED…
Lost on my way to college…
Starting my professional career in the Royal Australian Navy, I thought I had it all figured out - A couple years in an entry role, smash SF selection, then “go to the teams”… It all sounded so easy (The recruiter thought so too, and assured me it really would go down like this).
…Needless to say, it didn’t go the way I planned it to.
A discharge later, massive chip on my shoulder and with all my dreams of being an operator crushed, I found myself rapidly transitioning into the world of private sector security and emergency response.
I quickly progressed through roles including:
Anti Piracy
Somewhere off the coast of Somalia…
Mining
Where is the diamond lol.
Finding the mining FIFO life to be an easy lateral move out of uniform - but still not really feeling it - I was constantly searching for the “right” career path…. And then one night, it happened…
The eureka moment
Me, Circa 2014.
Returning from an early morning mine site rescue, I witnessed the first in country trial of an autonomous / unmanned dump truck, running its course.
Immediately, a string of questions went through my mind:
Who’s watching the trucks? ;
Who’s watching the networks? and most importantly ;
Who’s watching the people, responsible for watching all of the above?
How it went down.
At this point, I knew instinctively I had to get into the dark art of cybersecurity. I didn’t know why and I didn’t know how I was going to do it… But I knew this was what I’d been looking for all along.
Armed with nothing more than a strong interest in the field and multiple viewings of Hackers under my belt, I dove head first into trying to break into the industry.
What I thought I’d be doing, just with less Angelina Jolie.
This decision kicked of a chain of (mostly positive) events, leading me - and my then partner, now incredible wife - to leave our comfortable existence in Perth and move to Canberra, where I quickly found my feet in the DOD and federal government contracting scene.
Somewhere in the Australian desert… Repping Westside Barbell.
Starting off in the technical security space, I dedicated myself to constantly upskilling, training and networking, eventually landing my first cyber contracting role at a government department… From there, as they say, the rest is history.
… VS HOW IT’S GOING
At present I’m concentrating on growing my own business, Cameron Corporation PTY LTD - The goal being to provide the highest level of customer service to a vast range of clients through a broad range of services, tailored to their own specific needs.
Because, as they say…
IYKYK.
